25 He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal. 26 If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour. - John 12:25-26 (KJV)

Jesus was speaking of Himself, and His upcoming death, in this verse, but it also applies to us. Jesus said this same thing in several other scriptures (Matthew 10:39, 16:25 & Mark 8:35). This is speaking in a comparative sense, as Jesus also said in other scriptures (Matthew 10:37). Anyone, who loves their life in this world more than they love God, can not expect to go to heaven. The “life eternal” is not just living forever with the Lord, but is to know God and Jesus in an intimate way (John 17:3) now, in this life, and living with the Lord forever in eternity (Revelation 21:3). Everyone will live forever, either on the New Earth with the Lord, or in the lake of fire along with the devil (Revelation 20:15).

The Father will honor those that serve Jesus (1 Samuel 2:30), and what a wonderful thing it is to know that God will honor us, as we serve Him. Jesus had just been talking about laying down His life for us, so we should be willing to lay down our lives for Him by becoming a living sacrifice (Romans 12:1). Jesus made it clear that laying down your life for another, is the greatest expression of the “AGAPE”, God’s kind of love, that you can have (John 15:13). This is the kind of love that all of us, who are born again, should have for Jesus and the Father, and we should live our lives for them. Praise God for the sacrifice of His Son for us.
