57 And they were offended in him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, save in his own country, and in his own house. 58 And he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief. - Matt 13:57-58 (KJV)

Jesus offended just about everyone in His family and hometown, as He was claiming to be the Messiah, and they could not believe it. This is sure true, as all people who are serving the Lord with all their hearts, will find rejection in their own families and in their own hometown. Jesus said Himself that He did not come to bring peace on the earth, but a sword, and division among your own families (Matthew 10:34-36). Jesus was said by the angels announcing His birth, to be bringing peace toward man (Luke 2:14), but that means peace from God toward man, meaning the hostility from God toward mankind was over. That is why Jesus was called the Prince of Peace.

Notice that Jesus “could” do no mighty works in His hometown (Mark 6:5), and that was the reason that He did not do many there. Even Jesus, who was perfect in His faith, could not do many miracles when the people had a lot of unbelief in their hearts (Matthew 17:20). Jesus had to separate Himself from the unbelief of people when He did His miracles. This shows us that in order for us to do the works Jesus did, and commanded us to do (John 14:12), we also have to not be surrounded by the unbelief of other people, as well as not having unbelief in our own hearts. We, who have the Holy Ghost, can do the works that Jesus did, if we will just renew our minds with God’s Word (Romans 12:2), and not have unbelief present (Mark 9:23). Study the life of Jesus during His ministry here on the earth, and you will discover what it takes to operate in the power of God by healing the sick, etc. (Mark 16:17-18). If we would all go out and raise a few dead people back to life, we would have a sure revival going – Praise God for the power given us.
