10 For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. 11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. - Romans 6:10-11 (KJV)
This is talking about Jesus of course, and is telling us that He died unto sin once. This is repeated many times in Scripture, to emphasize that Jesus, as well as the born again believer, dies just once to sin, and then are born anew into a life that is not dominated by sin. We are all born with a sin nature ever since Adam sinned in the Garden of Eden (Romans 5:12), and that sin nature is what leads us to sin. When we get born again that sin nature dies (Romans 6:6) and is replaced by the Spirit of Jesus (Galatians 4:6) which leads us to live holy.
Many teach that our sin nature keeps resurrecting, so that we have to die to sin over and over, but that is not true. We die to sin once, as Jesus died once, but we will still have a tendency to sin, as our mind has been trained to sin by our old sin nature. We must therefore renew our minds by reading the Word of God (Romans 12:2), and getting rid of the old sinful thoughts. When born again you die unto sin, but also come alive unto God through Jesus. It is important that you not just concentrate on overcoming sin, but that you give yourself to serving God, as that is what it is all about, listening to and obeying Jesus (Hebrews 5:9). If you experience the love of God, who is love (1 John 4:8), then you will want to serve Him with all your heart, and know that He will reward you for doing so (Hebrews 11:6). Thank you Lord for setting us free from sin.
