44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. - John 8:44 (KJV)
What a strong statement Jesus gave here, and the amazing thing is, He was saying this to people who believed on Him (John 8:31). Jesus is making it clear that just believing in Him was not salvation. You must have actions of faith to go with your belief before it can lead to salvation (James 2:17). Jesus also made it clear that you must continue in His word to be a disciple of His (John 8:31). The scriptures tell us many places that we need to renew our minds by studying God’s Word, and learning about His ways (Romans 12:2). There really is no shortcut to knowing God, but just by reading and learning His words. You will never truly understand God and His love (1 John 4:8), any other way, but by staying in His word. We must always obey Jesus to assure our eternal salvation (Hebrews 5:9).
This verse sure does let us know more about the devil, as he is the father of the wicked, and the father of all lies and liars. You can be sure that the devil and not God are using those that constantly lie. We were all born with a sin nature since the fall of Adam (Romans 5:19) and were sinners at birth. The sin nature is what makes the unsaved sinners, and that is the reason you must be born again (John 3:7) to replace that sin nature with the righteousness of Jesus, and become a brand new creature (2 Corinthians 5:17). Praise God for His awesome plan of salvation.
