Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, for he is God's servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God's wrath on the wrongdoer. Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God's wrath but also for the sake of conscience.

Does this apply to our own government though? See in a christian nation i could understand, but in our current nation it doesn't really work when we are ruled by a hostile enemy

God wants his children to be obedient. This does not apply when the “authorities” are at enmity with God’s word. When you start to go down the rabbit holes about governments being private companies run under color of law, I think that there is a valid argument to be made that this subjection is void.

It’s important to remember also that he set this up all the way back as a result of Cain slaying Abel. He knew that if he placed righteous men in charge, jealous, angry, wicked men would always uprise and slay them. The power hungry have no problem being vicious to other wicked men; and the meek and humble might be able to squeeze through the cracks of injustice. Seeing the wickedness turns good men away from evil, and back to God. He gets his true servants, we get the blissful kingdom to come; and the wicked keep other wicked men under some restraint, and this broken temporary kingdom is their reward.

There comes a time (seemingly very soon) that their wickedness tramples upon God’s people and his word. This is when their time runs out. Their probation ends and destruction comes to their kingdom.
