31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; 32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. - John 8:31-32 (KJV)
Jesus is making it clear, that just believing on Him does not make you a disciple of His. You must continue in His word to be a disciple of His, and just knowing whom Jesus is, does not save you, as even the devil knows who He is (James 2:19). You must have faith to please God (Hebrews 11:6). Faith comes by the Word of God (Romans 10:17), so you must stay in the Word to have faith. And then the just shall live by faith (Habakkuk 2:4, Romans 1:17, Galatians 3:11, Hebrews 10:38), and you must have the justification of Jesus to be saved. Otherwise you must stay in the Word of God to assure that you continue in your salvation, as well as obeying Jesus (Hebrews 5:9).
The word used here for know means more than just mental knowledge, as it is like Adam knew Eve and she bore a son (Genesis 4:1), so it means an intimate knowledge of the word, which is truth. Only the truth you know shall make you free. Many use just “the truth shall make you free” of this verse, and that is not right, as it is only the truth you have intimate knowledge of, that will make you free. There really is no other way to be right with God, and keep our salvation intact, except by staying in God’s Word, and living our lives in accordance with Jesus commands. A casual Christian that only gives the Lord one day a week at the most will not fulfill the requirements of being a “disciple indeed”. Live your life for the Lord, and keep His Word in your thoughts at all times, and you will have the peace and joy that only comes from staying close to Him – Praise God for His goodness!
