Daily Devotional

March 6

14 Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. 15 For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that. - James 4:14-15 (KJV)

What an absolute truth, as a human has no way of knowing what will happen tomorrow, or in the future. Our whole lives are but a puff of smoke compared to eternity. We need to keep this in mind, and put all the things that happen in this life, in comparison to eternity, so that they will not be of any real importance. If we keep our minds on our eternal destiny (John 14:1-3), we not only will desire to be born again, but once we are, it will keep us focused on our eternal future with Jesus on the New Earth (Revelation 21:3) – now that is something to look forward to!

James is telling us that we need to not be planning our own futures, but we need to let God, through the Holy Spirit, lead us in all our future plans. It is written that we should not try to plan our own future (Jeremiah 10:23), as we are not capable of directing our own steps. If us humans would only quit trying to be our own gods, and let God be our guide through life, then we would not get into all the problems we tend to get into. We have an enemy, the devil, that wants to destroy us (John 10:10), and we made him the god of this world in the Garden of Eden, so if we don’t let the Holy Spirit lead us, the devil will (Romans 6:16). God has a perfect plan for each one of us and He wants only the best for us (Jeremiah 29:11). Why would we go with the devil, instead of God? Doesn’t make any sense to me, and I thank my God for delivering me from this world of iniquity!
