3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: 4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) 5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; - 2 Cor 10:3-5 (KJV)
Even the born again Christian is still walking in the flesh, as it is our spirit that is born again (Galatians 4:6), and brand new, not our flesh. A born again believer does not war after the flesh, as our war is spiritual now, and once we are born again, the devil will try to destroy us, as he comes only to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10). Therefore our battle is spiritual, and against the devil and his evil forces, and not against humans.
Since us Christians are now in a spiritual battle with the devil, we have to use spiritual weapons, and not carnal ones. The spiritual weapons we have to use are provided by the Lord, and most are to protect us in our battle, with one offensive weapon – the sword, which is the Word of God (Ephesians 6:10-18). The Word of God is a powerful weapon, and Jesus used “it is written” to counter the temptations of the devil when He was on the earth, and it will work for us the same way.
Notice that our battle with the devil is in our thoughts and imaginations. The devil has no real power (Ephesians 6:11), but his battle is always in our minds, as he comes at us with thoughts and lies to deceive us, not with any power of his own. The church has taught that the devil is strong and powerful, but his only weapon is deceit, and he comes against the Word of God, to steal it from us (Matthew 13:19), and to turn us away from serving God. Praise the Lord that we have the weapons to protect us from the ways and wiles of the devil (James 4:7)!
