6 Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainty meats: 7 For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee. - Prov 23:6-7 (KJV)
This term “evil eye” is speaking of being full of darkness or evil thoughts (Matthew 6:22-23), and includes putting getting rich ahead of serving God (Proverbs 28:22). This verse is telling us not to be fooled by those with an evil heart, who are full of darkness (evil), as they will tempt us to fellowship with them, and serve the devil like they do. Remember the devil comes only to steal, kill and destroy us (John 10:10). We should not even desire the things of the evil people in life, but keep our eyes upon God, and the things of the Lord (Ephesians 1:18). We do this by studying the Word (bible), and keeping our focus on what the Lord tells us to do, thereby renewing our minds to be more like Christ in all our thoughts (Romans 12:2).
Verse 7 contains an awesome truth, as how we think in our hearts, is how we will become in our actions (Proverbs 4:23). When the bible talks about the heart, it is referring to our spirit, souls, and minds, including our imaginations. God made us to be guided by our hearts, and when He looks upon us, He looks at our hearts, not our bodies (1 Samuel 16:7). This is why we can appear righteous to God, as when He looks upon a born again believer, He sees the born again spirit of Jesus living within us (Galatians 4:6), and He sees the righteousness of Jesus, not our self righteousness. Because our hearts control our actions is why we must renew our minds to the things of God, and the more we do that, the more we will be able to let the spirit within us, guide us into being more like Jesus (John 8:31). Thank you Father for creating us in such an awesome way!
