3 And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads. 4 And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born. - Rev 12:3-4 (KJV)

This great red dragon is the Devil and Satan (Revelations 12:9). God did not make the Devil, but He made an anointed Cherub called Lucifer, and sent him to the Garden of Eden to serve and watch over Adam and Eve. When Lucifer entered into the snake and talked Eve into eating the forbidden fruit from the tree of good and evil (Genesis 3), and she got Adam to eat also, then Lucifer became Satan and Adam and Eve became his servants. Even though Satan was now a fallen angel, he did not lose his home in heaven, as he was still appearing before God in the book of Job (Job 1:6), and he remained in heaven as the accuser of the brethren (Revelations 12:10) – appearing before God as our accuser. When Lucifer became Satan, he lost his power as an angel, and then had to operate in the power given to us humans. When Jesus defeated the devil (Revelation 12:9) Jesus regained the keys of death, and all remaining earthly power that Satan had. He now has no power at all except to lie and deceive us humans.

When Jesus came to earth and died for us, and was resurrected, He went back to heaven and it was then that Jesus and the Holy Angels made war with Satan, and the other fallen angels, and cast them out of heaven onto the earth. Now Satan is no longer abiding in heaven, and his days are numbered here on earth (Revelation 12:12). All the teachings about Lucifer (Satan) making war with God doesn’t make any sense at all, as no one is going to overthrow God. The war was when Jesus regained control over heaven and earth by becoming a God-Man (Matthew 28:18), and then casting Satan out of heaven. When Satan talked about putting his throne above the throne of God, I believe it was talking about here on earth. Praise God for His Word, and for the Holy Ghost to help us understand it!
