There are so many different translations and variations it seems hard to tell where to start. I've heard that many have a Bible to read in conjunction with the King James version. Some are supposedly more accurate or literal translations, others provide context, some are easier to read. Are there one or two companion Bibles you use and can explain why you like then? Sorry if I didn't articulate the question properly.

I'd like to have something physical, that I can sit on a shelf.

then pick one up at literally anywhere they sell them. Or the next time you go stay in a hotel steal the giddeon bible that's probably in a drawer already.

I just wanted any idea of what to look for when shopping instead of going in blind. That's all.

Honestly I don't believe it matters. Most of the new testament is easy to translate because the original was written in latin or greek or something (I used to know but can't remember) that was extremely prevalent at the time.

The old testament is just a bunch of irrelevant jew lawbooks that isn't really worth reading anyway.
