There are so many different translations and variations it seems hard to tell where to start. I've heard that many have a Bible to read in conjunction with the King James version. Some are supposedly more accurate or literal translations, others provide context, some are easier to read. Are there one or two companion Bibles you use and can explain why you like then? Sorry if I didn't articulate the question properly.

NKJV works for me. It cleans up the Olde English of the KJV by changing the thees and thines to you and yours, stuff like that. I haven't found anything challenging when comparing it to a pew Bible.

Stick with the Textus Receptus. Read "If the Foundations Be Destroyed" by Gail Riplinger. I sometimes just use a general concordance or Haley's Bible Handbook.

KJV + Greek New Testament + LXX

Douay-Rheims is a good second English translation, being as it is a counterpoint to the Reformation

Otherwise, learn Latin and read the Clementine Vulgate. Learn Greek and read the Septuagint.

I would recommend the Catholic translation of the Vulgate, the The Douay–Rheims Bible. It never hurts to understand where the Other Side is coming from.

The word of god doesn't need translation. If you're too hooked up on the literal meaning of a translated word you're missing the wisdom and grace of the experience of reading the bible. If you read something that doesn't sit right with you, then yeah look into it online or something, but in general it's not worth getting into a tizzy about.

then pick one up at literally anywhere they sell them. Or the next time you go stay in a hotel steal the giddeon bible that's probably in a drawer already.

I just wanted any idea of what to look for when shopping instead of going in blind. That's all.
