23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; 24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. - Eph 4:23-24 (KJV)

The Greek word “PNEUMA” that was translated “spirit” in this verse, is not referring to the Holy Spirit, but means “mental disposition”, which is meaning our attitude. Paul is telling us that we must renew our minds (Romans 12:2), and change our attitudes (outlook, feelings, and disposition), to line up with God’s Word, so we will not just be saved, but we will reflect Christ in us. It is not enough to just believe in Jesus and God, but we must reflect all the Christian values in how we act and think, as even the devils know there is a God (James 2:19).

The Greek word that was translated “put on” literally means to “clothe oneself with”, so it is telling us we need to act like our new man, by letting him be who we are. If we continue to live a carnal life, after being born again, then we are not letting Jesus live through us. You have to die to yourself, and let Jesus (your born again spirit) become who you are, and let it show in your outward life. We are, right now, (if born again) just like Jesus is, and it is not something we will be in the future, but right now (1 John 4:17), in this world. When you are born again, you become the righteousness of Jesus, and are truly holy, right now. Our new spirit is the very spirit of Jesus, and that is why we are part of His body (the church), as we have His spirit in us. Our new spirit is the part of us that has been redeemed. Our body and souls are purchased, but will not be redeemed until Jesus comes again. If we will walk after the spirit, instead of the flesh, we will be letting Jesus live through us, and we will act like He does. Praise God for our wonderful salvation!
