3 But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God. - 1 Cor 11:3 (KJV)
The main purpose of this verse is to show that Christ is the head of the church, meaning He is the head of every Christian. It is important that all believers realize that Christ is Lord and the head of the body (the church). We have Pastors, Apostles, Evangelists, etc. in the church, but although we have many members of the body, we only have one head – Christ. We should always follow, and submit, to the church leaders, but only as long as they are teaching, and leading, in accordance with the true Word of God. Never follow the leading of the church if they are not following the leading of Jesus in their teaching.
Some have tried to take scriptures like this one, and say that all women are to submit to all men. That is not what this is teaching. The word translated “women” in this verse is the Greek word “GUNE”, and it means “a woman, specifically a wife” (Strong’s Concordance). This same Greek word was translated 92 times in the New Testament, as “wife” or “wives”, in other verses, showing that it is referring to the man’s wife. So this verse is saying that the man is head of the wife in a marriage union (Ephesians 5:23). God ordained this to be when He created mankind, as He created the man first (Genesis 2:7), and then created the woman from the man’s rib (Genesis 2:21-22), and created her for the man. This is apparent in Genesis during the creation. The man is the head of the marriage union in all physical matters, but not the spiritual head, as Christ is the spiritual head of us all. If the man truly loves his wife as Christ loves the church, then the relationship will never be a conflict (Ephesians 5:25). A wife should never obey the husband, if it is contrary to the Word of God. Praise God for His direction in all matters of life.
