6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. (Isaiah 64:6 KJV)
This is referring to our self-righteousness, as in comparison with God’s righteousness, our human righteousness is like filthy rags, no matter how good we try to be. People, who think they are good enough for God to let them into Heaven without Jesus, are sure wrong, as this verse is saying that none of us are worthy on our own. Since Adam brought sin into the world, we are all born sinners, and all of us have sinned and come short of the Glory of God (Romans 3:23), Jesus is the Glory of God. Even though this scripture is from the Old Testament, it is still true, as God does not change. Our sin nature, which we are born with, makes this fact true even before we ever commit a sin of our own. We are born sinners and there is no way that we can be in communion with God on our own.
The wonderful truth is now, that if we have been born again, we now have the very righteousness of Jesus living inside us in our spirits (Romans 3:22). When God looks upon us he sees our born again spirit, as He is a Spirit Himself (John 4:24), and sees us as righteous as Jesus is. Wow! Now that is a wonderful fact, and once we have been born again, our new spirit is sealed (Ephesians 1:13), and when we sin, it does not corrupt our new spirits, so we remain truly holy in the sight of God. That is why the Gospel is such Good News, as Jesus not only took our sins upon Himself on the cross, but then gave us His spirit to live inside us, bringing us back into relationship with our Holy Father (John 17:3). Now that is really good news, as we could not accomplish this on our own. Thank you Father for your wonderful mercy and grace, bringing us back into relationship with you. Praise God for His wonderful gift of salvation!
