The story of Maccabees is more of historic curiosity; and the trials they endured can be just as invigorating to those who live to witness the similar kind - your objection is understandable though. But God can be understood without the Bible - if you NEED a specific written work to understand God, do you really understand him? You got some good knowledge, like an old scribe.
