Essentially simulation or "painting" a canvas is an expensive operation. Instead of calling the render/paint function once, its called multiple times which increases the amount of resources required.

Coders write a surprising amount of code without regard to the expense of the operation. Then someone of a higher pay grade and wisdom refactors it and everyone is astonished at multi-hundred percent speed improvements. Wash, rinse, repeat.

I worked as a senior dev and got shit for the negative k-loc because I stripped too much unnecessary code out of the repos.
