Apparently there is an open source distributed and self hosted search engine project: https://yacy.net/
You just download the java binary and start the server. I haven't used it yet so I don't understand how it works fully but apparently:
You start the server on your computer
Use your browser to connect to it locally and search the web.
You can configure the server for things like storage and web crawling. It will your local storage for the p2p mesh data in some manner but I am not certain how this works.
Gab was also hiring search engineers a few months ago.
Search is dead. The distributed model going forward is going to be the way.
