Holy shit! I approached the salesman after I saw that and he said, "yea, welcome to Canada."

I did some research later and discovered the tax is broken into two taxes:

  • National sales tax 5%
  • Province/Territory tax varies depending on the province.

Communism is great. Just look at all the benefits you get: great schools, free grade A health care and police that cut down on free speech.

Nope. Everything is more expensive.

Gasoline is about 1.70/liter. You need about 4 liters so that's $6.80 CAD and that's $5 USD/gallon.

I went out for dinner and prices are about the same until you add the tax. I went to a Dollarama, which is a dollar store. Needless to say, there is nothing for a dollar anymore. After money exchange rate calculations, prices were similar, except you get hit with a 15% tax. Ouch!

I remember when Canadian fuel cost way more than in the US, but now I see they're about the same.

Well, gas costs me about $3.50/gallon. I stopped just short of the Canadian border and filled my tank up before crossing. I saved over a $1/gallon.

Diesel is about the same though, which is what my car needs.
