Wresting / grappling sports are much harder on the cartridge of the ears. The whole "cauliflower ear" that you see on wrestlers. That's one of the main reasons that high school wrestlers wear head gear.

The nose is pretty easy to repair if it doesn't get set right. All boxers wear mouth guards, so teeth injuries are rare.

Really, boxing isn't that dangerous of a sport as long as you don't get rabbit punched (hit in the back of the head, which is illegal and will DQ the other boxer). Lots of cuts and some concussions. But, less dangerous than american football, IMHO.

Fun facts:

  1. Boxers wear gloves to protect the hands, not to protect the opponent. Original boxers were dock and factory workers who would fight on lunch break or after work. A concussion wasn't a concern, but a broken hand would mean you couldn't work and your kids would go hungry.
  2. Before gloves, head shots were legal, but without gloves there was a good chance of a hand injury so most boxers avoided head shots and focused on body shots. Today, that has changed.
  3. Boxing stances have changed drastically in the last 100 years, mostly because of (a) gloves resulting in more head shots, and (b) boxing has removed most grappling. The non-dominate arm being out stretched you see in very old photos made more sense when you were trying to force space against your opponent. Today, we bring the hands in to help protect against the head shots.
