I had the opportunity to try Whistlepig Piglets featuring their 10, 12 and 15 year old bourbon. This was a virtual tasting set up by a vendor my company uses.
We started out with the 10. The nose was quite sharp and reminded me of a smokey fire. The palette was bitter and gave me the impression it wasn't quite done aging yet. Not bad for mixing, but for drinking neat I'd give it a pass.
Moving on to the 12. The nose had hints of floral and citrus and I detected a slight walnut scent. The palette was the smoothest bourbon I have ever tasted. Sat in my mouth letting me absorb every flavor. I detected a slight bit of caramel to go with the citrus. It went down clean, no burn.
If the 12 was that good, the 15 has to be better, right? Well, not to me. The 15 had an overwhelming nose of wood. I could smell the barrel it was aged in. The wood was so strong that I cannot recall other scents. (I need to take better notes when doing these) The palette was much more harsh than the 12. It bit all the way down and had a harsh after taste.
In the end, the 12 was the winner. I was ready to go out and get a bottle of it but at $130 it'll have to be a treat.
By comparison the 10 is $85 and the 15 is $270(!). The lesson here is that older booze isn't always better nor worth the money.
