If he's old enough to fly like that he's old enough to get his own food. If you're gonna cut him loose now's the time. Otherwise, congrats, you have a new pet.
That's not quite how baby robins work, but I get what you're saying. He is free to leave at any time, but until his tail feathers are fully grown he can't fully fly.
