No need. I've been told that image host down = blocked by my isp, and I've also been told that it is not blocked by my isp.
Conclusion: contradictory answers don't help solve issues.
Clearly I have an issue that might or might not be solved by using a VPN.
Rather than depending on flipping a coin to see what the answer might be, I thought I would do a few tests to see if is related to file size, image source, image host, or vpn.
But really I just want to be able to click on a post and see what all the cool kids are looking at while I drink my coffee in the morning. 2 hours in, and I really don't care any more; I have things to do today. I'm sure I'll figure it out sooner or later. Or not.

There's no contradiction if you know how to process the results.
Open a pic8 link, you'll either get an error while still on pic8 domain (before getting redirected to one of its multiple hosts) or get a 3rd party host error after being redirected (some are also blocking VPN/Tor IP ranges).
