Emotion is you interacting with energy, it forms the field of available words, and behaviors. Emotion = energy in motion. Sentimentality is false emotions, believing they're real is pathological, sentimentality is often mistaken for emotions, but it is not real emotion, it is fake emotion. Sentimentality is what Mr.Sowell is describing. This is a clear and important difference. Sentiment is feeling generated from idea, emotion is feeling which generates idea. Ideas can perpetuate feelings, but if the idea is not based on actual feeling reality, actual processing of information with your senses, and purely hypothetical, then it is a partial feeling, it is a fake emotion. A sentiment, and when taken to an extreme it is sentimentality.

You can clearly tell the difference between one and the other, sentiment is what you feel when you see a soppy movie where the hero dies, or whatever. You feel that, but it's not real, it's an idea which gave birth to a partial feeling, it's fake, as soon as the phone rings you snap out of it.

It's like losing your keys or your phone when it's not really lost, or you think something terrible has happened when it really hasn't. It's just an idea which mutates into a feeling, that is a fake emotion, not a real one. It is not based on reality, but your thoughts, which are often wrong.

Emotion is visceral, it is different from sentiment, you cannot fake emotion, because it is largely unconscious. Emotion is energy in motion, it is the stimulus around you that is motivating you. If you only allow real stimulus to motivate you, then your emotion is real.

Real emotion is unconscious just like the vast majority of your body operates on auto-pilot, you are not consciously aware of, nor are you controlling all the metabolic processes that happen to your body. Emotion being energy in motion therefore is mostly unconscious, it is your energy field in which you can branch out different novel responses.

You have a good energy about you, people respond to that, anxious people relax, angry people calm down, etc. It's about the energy you bring, if your energy is too strong it starts changing the people around you.

I'd say what he said is racist, but he's black and I've been conditioned to believe saying anything against black people even of they are wrong is racist. 🤡 🌎 hOnK! HoNk!
