BBS = Bulletin Board System. They were popular in the 80s and early 90s. You could dial in with a modem and talk trash about how much TRS80s/AppleIIs/commodores sucked donkey nuts and then wait til the next day for a reply so you could bait people out some more. Later in the 80s people came out with text based multiplayer games where you would get 5 turns per day or so and battle other users.
