Since it will probably be burred in the comment I thought I would post it here as well.

If you live in a "under served" ADS-B area some of the tracking sites will send one to you for free as long as you run it.

https://www.flightradar24.com/apply-for-receiver Toward the bottom right they have a "most wanted locations" list so if you are near one you can get free gear.

I stream data to flightradar24 and in return I get free "business" access which would cost a lot otherwise.

They also provide their own instructions on building your own setup for cheap. https://www.flightradar24.com/build-your-own

You can pair dump1090 with "flightmap" to have your own local map that shows aircraft around you that you can click on to watch their path, get tail numbers, altitude, etc.

(Two projects, the second is more a more "complete" fork for the other. https://github.com/antirez/dump1090 https://github.com/MalcolmRobb/dump1090

There are all kinds of plugins you can get as well to do a ton of different stuff with the data. One of the projects I want to work on but have not yet is to have it stream all of the data my site captures to a database that would then hold historical data so I can just go back to it and look it up if I see something odd/interesting.

I have used it to find "gas sniffers" flying in the area that people were asking about why they were doing strange figure 8's all over town for a few weeks.

I still need to setup/install my Mode S receiver too. Right now I am just running my ADS-B.

These are a good start for radios. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BMKZCKTF https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073JWDXMG

Is it? I haven't really price raspberry pi in forever. Not since they had that shortage and they were selling for like $300.

Plus my hackrf can do all sorts of other cool stuff with the right firmware.

Well, my RPi setup is using a older one. Probably a pi3-b or something? Between it and the SD card, SDR/parts I think it cost me around $60-65 total?

If you want to get a modern RPi 5 with the highest RAM and the SDR then you are probably going to be easily around ~$200 depending on where you get the parts and stuff from. In that case, yeah. Just get the HackRF.

I have some old RPi 1's I can't even give away (I have been trying to) even for someone to give to a young kid to mess with.

I should start posting "hardware swaps" in the sub. Assuming you are willing to give someone an address to ship something. I think you can often ship directly to a UPS Store or something without having to give your address but it's still going to end up being somewhere "local" to you and I don't want to dox people.

I appreciate the offer but I'm not sure what I'd even do with them.

Yeah, that's kind of my problem. I want to give them away to someone that could do something with them but it seems like no one wants them even though they still work just fine. They just are not super fast.
