"Are Planes Tracking You? (Conspiracy Proven)"
Since it will probably be burred in the comment I thought I would post it here as well.
If you live in a "under served" ADS-B area some of the tracking sites will send one to you for free as long as you run it.

Toward the bottom right they have a "most wanted locations" list so if you are near one you can get free gear.
I stream data to flightradar24 and in return I get free "business" access which would cost a lot otherwise.
They also provide their own instructions on building your own setup for cheap.

You can pair dump1090 with "flightmap" to have your own local map that shows aircraft around you that you can click on to watch their path, get tail numbers, altitude, etc.
(Two projects, the second is more a more "complete" fork for the other.

There are all kinds of plugins you can get as well to do a ton of different stuff with the data. One of the projects I want to work on but have not yet is to have it stream all of the data my site captures to a database that would then hold historical data so I can just go back to it and look it up if I see something odd/interesting.
I have used it to find "gas sniffers" flying in the area that people were asking about why they were doing strange figure 8's all over town for a few weeks.
I still need to setup/install my Mode S receiver too. Right now I am just running my ADS-B.
These are a good start for radios.
