Imagine the thinking behind opening a discount airline: "I'm going to just offer lower air fares than established airlines, and to cut costs, I won't do ANY preventive maintenance, only fixing things when they will not survive the next flight. I'll find pilots and other crew that are willing to work for less, maybe I have to look past drug/alcohol abuse in their past. To avoid paying out people for delayed flights, we'll just keep them in the planes, and turn off the engines to save fuel. We'll nickel and dime people with luggage, and make the spaces under seats smaller, or just make the sample size box in airports smaller, so that people are forced to pay for their personal items as carry on. This will TOTALLY make me rich".

Poor planning. If you're going to compete with large companies, you need to be able to offer value and have a niche that makes you not only different, but compelling. Differentiating yourself with a poor experience doesn't work.

Yet there are always people who try to start such companies, and end up crashing and burning.
