It's amazing how many try to claim others were first in flight with ridiculous machines that were barely controllable if they could even get into the air. The Wright brothers were the first to apply modern engineering to the problem of flight and solved it. Scientists and enthusiasts all failed before and after the Wrights, most spectacularly a gov't "scientist" who went over his budget by a factor of 2....

What I found disgusting was the government corruption.

It is sad to see how the Wrights were shafted by the patent system. They could have gone so much further if they hadn’t been tied down by the legal system and all the lawsuits and trying to defend their intellectual rights. Sad.

Wrights worked out the formulae for aeronautics. If anybody did fly before them, where are their formulae? Guys like Chanute made some nice human-carrying kites, but it was hit or miss.

If anybody wants to pick another, earlier name, then I'll toss in my best guess: Daedalus. No, earlier was Jason the Argonaut's wife Medea. She flew home to Asia after Jason did her wrong. Asia was so impressed, a race called themselves the Medes in Persia. She was good. Her means of flight are not known. The tale of Medea rings of truth, as the tale puts the hero, Jason, in bad light. Fables never make the hero look like a jerk, but historic recordings can.

Medea gets my vote.

Montgolfier with hot air balloons?

It might bring some comfort to you to know that the Wright brothers ancestry can be traced back to England. The English killed a lot of Frenchmen, despite the wonderful food. Also, did you watch the video?

They were actually 3rd in flight. They were just the first to self promote so the newspapers and a crowd was there.
