I have to go with one of the Bourne movies, probably the first one.

As tempting as it is to go for a 'car' movie, or even a movie about racing, I love the driving done for the Bourne movies - so I'll go with the first of them. All the driving was done by a real driver, without the aid of CGI. The kind of precision driving that requires, along with the inability to damage too many vehicles beforehand, means the skills of the stunt drivers were exceptional.

Yeah, I gotta go with The Bourne Identity. It's truly exceptional driving.

If it had been plural, I'd have said the whole damned series - but the series with that bald-headed action star (Fast and Furious, I think?) has some pretty sweet driving in it, as well.

(Pardon me, if I'm not here long. I may fall asleep.)

The obvious answer (youtu.be)

[–] 4 pts

That is on my list to watch.

I have never seen it. Thanks for bringing it up. And, yes, I know my shame for having never seen it.

70s and 80s were a golden era for car chases (youtu.be)

I believe safety concerns and reduced durability of modern cars may have contribute to this

[–] 2 pts

I am going to have to politely disagree with the conclusion.

It may pain you to accept this, but modern cars are superior in pretty much every way - including durability. Back in ye olden days, those seventies and eighties cars, you'd be lucky to get 80,000 miles on an engine before it had to be rebuilt or scrapped. Today, you can plan on at least three times that before you need to rebuild the motor.

The bodies last longer and survive accidents better, too. You know those stupid fucking little SMART cars with seating for like two people and a midget? Yeah, put one of those up against a 1980 Ford LTD - and the damned SMART car is gonna win every time. Those 80s cars would also rust out in fairly short order.

What has happened is that we view the past with rose-colored glasses. We see the cars that survived and remember those. However, they built MILLIONS of those damned things and they were pretty shitty cars.

So, I can't agree with your conclusions with those specific regards. Modern cars are fucking awesome. I own old cars and they're loads of fun - but a modern vehicle is superior in just about every way.

Oh, before you say that you can't repair modern cars - you can. In fact, people do it all the time. Upgrade your tools and understanding, and they're very repairable, though they require fewer repairs.

I love modern cars, 'cause I 'member having to drive older cars. They kinda sucked in all sorts of ways, at least compared to today.

I clicked on this post just to link to that very clip.

Looks like they took out a camera at 4:07

The best (youtube.com)

[–] 4 pts

I had forgotten that movie existed - but it has now been added to my 'to-watch' list. As I recall, there's even a sequel called Naked Gun 2½.

[–] 3 pts

There's a third one, even. Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult

I marathoned them earlier in the year. The first one was definitely the best.

[–] 3 pts

I may have to do the whole series then. I was unaware of the third, thanks.

I'm not really a huge movie/TV guy - to the point where the memes are meaningless to me. I plan on fixing this, to some extent. No, I'm not going to start watching a lot of content - I'm just going to go through and make sure I've seen some of the classics and stuff that sounds interesting. Who knows, maybe I'll find something I like?

Entirely unrelated, I'm a pretty big fan of that Terry Gilliam fella. I've seen all of his stuff. I think I've seen most of Tim Burton's stuff, as well. There's also Kubrick and Tarentino (spelling?). So, it's not like I've watched no movies - it's just that I've never been into it so I haven't watched a lot of them.

[–] 3 pts

Gotta go with Tokyo Drift, because childhood love and drifting.

[–] 3 pts

That whole series has some pretty good driving in it and drifting takes some skill to do well. Have you watched any of the drifting competitions?

[–] 1 pt

I've seen a few drift competitions in my day on youtube. Tandem drifting looks fun as hell but I'm positive everyone who learns to do it wrecks at least once.

[–] 0 pt

I've watched a few different competitions and I can't actually quite figure out how they're scoring them.

We do some drifting (and some things that look like drifting) in rally, but it's generally avoided on a track unless you're showing off and not trying for a good lap time. It does look good and it does require some skill, especially with throttle modulation. It also requires some understanding of the car's balance, which is a good step.

In January, we're going to try to get a full week in over at the rally school. It should be good entertainment and educational.

I like Ronin's car chase. I think it has a good balance between realism and bullshit. I'd rather no pyrotechnics at all, but hey, it's a movie. I'm not saying it's the best, but it came to my mind.

https://youtube.com/watch?v=CVaNBrYLvFg

[–] 4 pts

I don't know the movie, but I'm skimming the video now.

I am afraid I'm unable to be unbiased. I'm an absolute sucker for a BMW - especially a late 90s M5. It was that exact era when I learned to love the BMW when I treated myself to a brand new 740il. It was my very first brand new BMW and only the second car I'd ever purchased new. (I was given a new Aries K when I got married and owned a Viper after my divorce.)

So, I'll put Ronin on my to-watch list. Thanks!

[–] 2 pts

I'm a fan of the classics, such as Bullitt
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=no7XR7s8Z7o

[–] 2 pts

That's the second to recommend it.

The sad truth is, I've never seen it. I am not really a movie buff, but this one is on my list. It's got that McQueen fella in it, as I recall. (I'm equally bad with actor names as I am with movies.)

[–] 2 pts

You're correct, it does star Steve McQueen. The story isn't particularly groundbreaking, but the car chases are absolutely iconic.
Watch the clip I linked to see what I mean.

And if I'm not mistaken, you're the guy that did the Blind Melon - No Rain cover that I enjoyed so much.

[–] 3 pts

I have it on my "to watch" list, and will get to it this winter. So, I'll skip the clip to avoid any spoilers.

And, yes, I am that guy. 'Snot a very difficult song to play and COF let me know you'd enjoyed it. I was going to thank you for your kind words, but that was the day Poal decided that I was a second-class citizen and ate my password and refused to let me reset it by email.

What's your favorite kind of music?

Over the past 2+ years, I've had a weekly guitar thread over on Voat. That's a whole lot of things that I've recorded just for interested parties. It has to be in the 'hundreds' by now, though I suspect COF would have a more accurate number, or at least an approximation.

[–] 1 pt

Also, I found it!

I realize this is kinda late - but I found it!

When trying to think of songs we'd done that you'd also like, seeing as you were a fan of the Blind Melon song, I tried to link you to a few others but none of them seemed really appropriate.

Well, I was just listening to a track and sharing it with the goats to promote that there's a guitar thread tonight and it dawned on me... This is something you'll probably really enjoy!

So, I came all the way over here, dug through old messages, and finally found your comment (as I couldn't remember your username). I speak to a whole lot of people and it takes quite a few interactions before I'll remember your username. So, it's nothing personal. It's just bad memory for these sorts of things.

Anyhow, on with the show!

https://clyp.it/i3od1rge

That's something that's probably a song you'll enjoy. The quality is there, the melody is there, and the song is probably familiar and it's from around the same time and genre.

[–] 1 pt

i agree the bourne identity was really good chase and overall a great movie

[–] 2 pts

I like the whole series. They still owe me one more movie, 'cause there were six books.

[–] 1 pt

action packed and cool spy shit throughout!!!

wake n bake time here. what you doin?

[–] 2 pts

I think I'm going to keep up the trend of the day.

I did my PT and my femur was more sore than normal, so I ate my full dosage and then added one of the dilaudid for the breakthrough pain.

This made me feel pretty comfy and it just so happens that I have extras that I've not taken because the pain was bearable. So, I think I'm going to eat more opiates than normal.

Other than that, my plans are much the same as they have been lately. I'm not technically on a honeymoon, but I'm probably going to leave the ringer turned off and keep the doors locked. At some point, I want to spend a few minutes with my son - as he's quite literally next door. He's returning to Maine this weekend and I'd like to spend a few moments with him before he goes.

So, I may have them over for dinner or go out to dinner. If so, I'll probably invite my daughter and her spouse and child. I haven't had even a single minute of baby time since returning. It's not that I've been really anti-social, it's that I've been largely enjoying the time alone with the wife. We have spent quite a bit of time with my kids and their families, so having some sorta-alone time was warranted.

Hmm...

I might also make some music, considering I've not yet done my guitar practice today. Well, I played for about an hour - but that was mostly just stretching and a couple of quick runs through the song we'll be recording for Friday night.

One of the most awesome things about my wife is that I can jam and make music with her. I don't have words to articulate how awesome this is, but it is pretty fucking awesome. Imagine thinking, "Hey, I'd like to play some music with someone else - and have that someone else have a modicum of skill so that we can play something specific!" and then, imagine that as being possible. Right this very minute, I can say, "Let's make some noise!" and she will.
