Here is what is banned:

— Facebook — Instagram — Kick — Reddit — Snapchat — Threads — TikTok — Twitch — X — YouTube

Here is what is explicitly allowed, for now:

— Discord — GitHub — Google Classroom — LEGO Play — Messenger — Pinterest — Roblox — Steam and Steam Chat — WhatsApp — YouTube Kids

First of all, why is Reddit banned and not Discord?

More importantly, why is GitHub even mentioned here?

GitHub is not social media. It is a source code repository hosting service. It’s for professional work, not sharing gossip. Do they also have their eyes on Gitlab, Bitbucket, Codeberg, etc.?

What about Usenet groups?

Those could be considered social networking, but they’re not websites. They don’t even rely on a single server. I would love it if kids discovered those.

Read about Nepal Discord elections

That’s something I didn’t know about.

That would be even more reason for the government to ban or limit Discord’s availability. Maybe the Australian government has some special access to Discord. I’ve heard rumors that the US government does.

I might of been snarky when I said "just read about it" I'll give you the scoop. In authoritarian Nepal, the PM got mad about memes, so banned all social media, implemented curfew "that'll show 'em" I don't know if you've heard of this one but "the gov would never completely ban games/social media/streaming ect. People need a release valve and taking it away will mean 'If I can't live comfortably, I guess I will riot'" So we got to see firsthand what happens if you take it away. People stormed their elected offices, the PM ran away and (this part is real) held an election on Discord for new PM.

And the intelligence agencies do have a direct link into Discord, confirmed in senate hearing.

I took this instance in Australia as "Reddit-cucks stay cucked, while gamers rise up."
