Forest don't absorb shit, especially forests that commonly host wildfire. Trees and plants make wood out of carbon + nutrients + sunshine. Trees burn and release carbon and nutrients. Trees die and rot, releasing carbon and nutrients. The only thing that permanently (on human timescales) absorbs carbon in meaningful amounts is the ocean when carbon becomes carbonate and falls to the bottom of the ocean.
