I don't know what the purpose of portraying those numbers as-is was, it clearly paints Influenza as horribly dangerous and Covid, not so much.
Reported numbers in the OP regarding deaths and infections seem to match those that can be seen here https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/australia/, it's around 1000 for deaths, around 50000 for infections, while idk what NSW, Vic, Qld, and such actually mean
Now this can be turned into a "see? Proof lockdowns work!"
New South Wales, Victoria, and Queensland.
I have a hard time finding the name of that news paper, no luck so far, but that's not so much of a problem since it points at sources corroborating the data
https://www.covid19data.com.au/ <- now idk what that source is worth, but it looks like any other in terms of reported numbers
Cases 0 new cases today (+0), 1257 yesterday, 53,851 total Local cases 0 local today, 1253 yesterday, 33,554 total (+175 interstate) Interstate 0 interstate cases today, 175 total Deaths 0 deaths today, 1006 total Recoveries / removed^ 0 recoveries and 0 removed inactives today, 27,638 and 6084 respective totals Active cases 19123 actives remaining (18995 local, 116 in HQ, 10 interstate)
Afluenza numbers for 2019 seem to be accurate enough too https://www.guild.org.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0025/84229/Influenza-Report-30-October-2019.pdf
This is from the "Pharmacy Guild of Australia" https://www.guild.org.au/
