I've seen a couple of posts on these, thank you @level_101 and @stupidbird.

Is anyone here actively using either of these systems? Do you have repeaters setup?

I've looked into both networks in both of my areas of operation, Mt Rainier WA area and Lake Fork TX area. Meshcore has more nodes "closer" to me in WA but neither has any real presance around Lake Fork.

I think these both look pretty interesting, I've watched some jew tube videos and they both have their fans and they both have people who say the other one sucks.

Looking for real world experience if you actually using one or both of these systems.

I have one connected to my Home Assistant instance that sends messages, but I have a couple that travel with me. I take one or more to hamfests and just general travel to see what's around me.

Meshtastic is pretty woke overall, I've had to mute several 8647 spammers over the past year.

Ha!! I hadn't even thought of that. Politics is like water, it is insidious. It will find the tiniest crack and it will find a way in.

I have both, I prefer meshcore as it is a newer protocol. Meshtastic is very noisy compared to meshcore.

what do you mean by noisy? I thought these things were text base?

Meshtastic sends a radio blast to all nodes and repeaters every time, Meshcore can use a defined path so as not to flood all the nodes with each transmission when going to a known location. Here is a n article for a more detailed description: https://simeononsecurity.com/articles/meshcore-vs-meshtastic-comparison-guide/

When you set up the repeater node does it automatically ad it to the map? Seems like you're doxxing your exact location.

[–] 1 pt

No, you will need to add them manually, or if they are visible to the public, someone else can. I do not post my repeaters on a map, but if I did they would be on my neighbors property, map wise. Only the real radio geeks would triangulate the true location, so I'm not too worried.

interesting take on it. I'll have to look into it more.

It seems to me that at some point they will be able to talk to each other as well. Is that realistic?

[–] 1 pt

Not anytime soon. Think Mac vs windows networking in the 1980s. The underlying command structures are to dissimilar. Not to say at some point they won't, it just won't happen soon.

My friends and I have settled on Meshtastic. A very useful purpose is a blue force tracker when doing goon shit, you can see where friendlies are just like you can in a video game. Not useful if you have to operate under EMCON though.

If you can see your friends and they can see you, can't the bad guys and the cops and everyone else see you too?

Your Meshtastic node can operate on different meshes. The one we use has a PSK so only people we give the key to, can access the detailed Meshtastic data. When I enable the public meshes, I set the node to obfuscate its location for privacy.

The nodes broadcast like crazy though, anyone with ESM capability can definitely figure out where the node is with little effort. Hence my comment about EMCON.

That's what I was thinking. So I don't really want to set up the node on my property.

Meshtastic. I have some handhelds never got to turning on and configuring.

Is there a way to internet bridge the two systems? Or is that a thing. So you could core local convert to tastic and then node out close to tx?

Saving for later.

I'm about in the same boat. I have a couple of mini nodes, and a couple of handhelds, but haven't actually done anything meaningful with them. I never got anything on any of them other than my local test messages. My terrain is pretty challenging so maybe that plays into it.

Needs Elon to add repeaters in Starlink birds.

Not sure 915Mhz has the range for that, but that'd be amazing. And probably commercialized immediately so the freq would get jewed.

I have no idea, just starting to look into these. Seems pretty interesting.

I am not currently using either. It's on my project list but I have been getting a bunch of house work done so I have put that project off until sometime next month probably.

This is a previous post I had on this. https://poal.co/s/technology/802870 @kikelMcJew has apparently worked with some of this. Also @CZshooter

I have some handheld units set up. Still have to assemble my repeater nodes though. They were relatively easy to get working.

This is climbing on my project list. I am not sold on which one yet except there seems to be more Meshcore nodes closer to me. That could be the deciding factor.
