I read: The Shining, Carrie, The Stand, and Pet Cemetary. All pretty good. His short stories, and the Bachman books finishe my S King phase. But, he wrote The Green Mile & Shawshank Redemption. Both good movies.

Twilight novels and Handmaid's Tale. Twilight single-handedly wrecked the entire both the entire vampire and werewolf genres at the same time and for all time. Handmaid's Tale only got popular because of that garbage TV series. I've read it and it's terrible. Atwood cannot write for shit.

Never read either of those, but I did watch part of the first season of Handmaid's Tale when it first came out, with my liberal female roommate (who was a great friend and a smart person, just retardedly liberal).

It was 2017, right after Trump got elected for the first time, and I remember watching a pretty brutal scene with her, where they , and she told me how scary it was, and how she thought that it would soon happen in this country, due to the takeover by white nationalists.

I pointed out that this shit actually happens everyday, it is just all done in Africa and the Middle East.

She got real mad at me, but couldn't actually express why.

But seriously I recall starting to read that Dan Brown one everyone loved. Felt like RL Stein meets the Templars. Tried to show my friend Foucault's Pendulum by Umberto Eco, which is pretty much a dramatized prophecy of the coming of Dan Brown. He found it to complex. Who knows?

I know this pain. I've felt like this has gotten accelerated since the 90s. Back then they made movies etc for US audiences so you'd find things like unique colloquialisms etc in scripts. Books did the same thing. People now write for international audiences and are made for the lowest common denominator and easier translation. I feel like half the modern movie book adaptations are made from books w/ Goosebumps tier shit writing.

I left because it is weird. I didn't mind the job itself, it was the managers and some god-awful expectations. I read stupid fast, so it wasn't too big a deal to read the best sellers at night. I did it for 12 years. I don't miss it. I kinda wonder if I was just a librarian because everyone expected that of me.

Hunger Games... it's written at like a 5th grade (white kid) reading level. The books also full of typos, even the editor didn't give a shit. Same with the Dexter novels. Idiotically dumb and poorly written. Just watch the Dexter series or the Hunger Games movies in either of those cases.

Some young adult novels are actually really good. I read The Giver by Lowis Lowry and was suprised by her not so veiled warnings against totalitarian/authoritarianism.

Jane eyre. The guy in the story is mean to Jane throughout the whole book then finally settles for her when he ends up disabled. Maybe he’s using her to get a free caretaker. Crappy love story. Get a life, Jane.

The Catcher in the Rye was terrible. I read it once when I was an angsty teenager and liked it, but an attempted reread as an adult was just unbearable.

She had an incredible book collection, and she was probably one of the most intelligent women I have ever known.

She was, to my knowledge, one of the few women in the country to graduate with an advanced degree in biology at the time. Never did anything with it, but instead was a dutiful wife to my grandfather.

She smoked a lot, drank a lot, read a lot, and was a classical liberal who was unrepentant about her feelings towards 'The White Man's Burden'.

She loved people of all races, but wasn't apologetic with her estimations of non-whites and their intelligence.

I remember a dinnertime conversation we had about her travels when I was a child, with my father and my step-mother.

She spoke of something silly an Argentinian had done, I can't remember what, but I do remember her saying:

But he was an Argentine, so it wasn't like he was intrinsically stupid, like the Brazilians

And I remember my Ultra-Liberal Academic step-mother getting super defensive about that, saying that Brazilians were not intrinsically stupid.

Just a funny memory. But I do really miss that lady.

The Enders Game novels by Orson Scott Card suck. How he got a nebula and hugo award out of those I have no idea.

Also: Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land. Starts awesome and then fritters off into some deranged fuck fest. Heinlein turned into a dirty old man and his late novels showed it.
