Agreed.
People don't make these decisions because they actually believe what they are saying, they make these decisions because we all have this very tribal need to be a part of something larger than ourselves.
Our ethnic and religious identities have been completely, and purposefully, stripped away from us, so people have to fill that void with their political identity, or maybe something even worse.
It became very apparent to me when I saw the way humans acted during the pandemic, when people I thought intelligent and rational devoted themselves to following 'The Science', which was a series of proclamations from lifelong bureaucrats, who functioned during that time as a form of clergy.
None of it had anything to do with science, it was all humans looking to add meaning to their life and ensure their own salvation, and demonstrate their devotion by abiding by the strict and illogical rules, chastising the vile others' who did not share their common faith. But God, belief in the transcendent, and really anything apart from a very materialist understanding of our world is gone in modern life.
Not that I am any better than any of them. I am, as a matter of fact, worse in many, many ways.
