My father just picked up a sports car that he wants to leave down in Florida and not take north for 6 months. I'd like to give him some advice about what he can do with that car other than leave it there. My thought would be to have it driven up or shipped on a transport, perhaps train travel or potentially just leaving it in Florida but in some sort of climate controlled facility. Any of you guys do this with your vehicles?

When we moved to Florida I packed up my car and drove it down. Plenty of people who live here during the winter months (snowbirds) transport their cars back and forth. There are services that handle it for you but they basically charge a fee to arrange for the actual transport company to take your car.

Depending on where your dad is and where in Florida he wants to leave the car, the Auto Train is another option.

Yeah I probably should disclose that he tried to have a car shipped down from the Northeast only to get bait and switched by the guy who after taking a non-refundable deposit started to walk the price up to a point where my father didn't want to afford it anymore. So I think he would probably want something that was more of a larger commercial operation and stay away from the mom and pops. Auto train might be a good idea. He does drive his regular car back and forth it's just getting the other one up.

There are a lot of shady companies in the transport biz. Most of my neighbors make a deal with the actual driver after the first trip. They pretty much either call or text directly and skip the middle man.

As long as he's close enough to DC to make it work, the Auto Train isn't bad. I'd recommend paying the extra fee to be last on and first off. That really speeds things up.

Well that's a good idea too. Also yeah he should probably ask some of his friends who shipped their cars back and forth. I'm just doing this without him actually saying anything to me. I just think that it would be a shame to leave his car South instead of enjoying it all summer.

If the car is worth a chunk of change, he needs to trailer it himself, or do a lot of research on the shipping company. A rare car just got stolen (I think last week) from a shipping company and it's obviously an inside job.

No it's not an exotic. It's just a typical sports car for where he's living now. He doesn't want to trailer it, not at his age.

what does age have to do with pulling a trailer with your vehicle?

Nothing if your able to pay attention while you're trailering. He's a curb jumping gold metalist these last few years.

OK. I know it's a hassle, but he needs to research whatever shipping company. Personally, I don't trust them simply because people make mistakes. I had a vehicle shipped. They try to make you sign the release before they will unload the vehicle, and my dumb ass did. The shipper placed my vehicle too far forward on the trailer and with flexing of the trailer, it rubbed the paint off in a couple of spots, the situation being hidden while the vehicle was still on the trailer. I've also read about people's vehicle showing up with gravel damage around the rear wheelwells ie the shippers pulled the vehicle off the trailer and hooned it at some point during shipping. I've also read about someone with a heavily modded car they disconnected the battery on after loading it on the trailer show up with the aftermarket ecu fried from someone trying to hook up the battery backwards, presumably to hoon it.

So hoon is some mouth breather white trash who decides they want to joyride your car? I wonder if you have a miles in miles out form. Id be like WTF if it was over a mile.

Store it but make sure its is driven every couple of weeks and have fuel added at least once every two months. A trickle charger is advisable too, especially if it is a modern car. The computers still draw even when they are off. Shipping is about 6-8 hundred each way. So the storage/ship costs are about the same. Kathys transport is an honest broker with fair pricing. I have used them for at least ten years for twenty transports. 903 229 7645

Thanks for the tip. He leaves two cars back North that are just sitting. Actually I think he might have the handyman come by once a month and fire them up, I don't know though. I got to ask when I talk to him again.
