I think it depends what you want to print. 3d is radically changing modelbuilding: everything from Star Wars to sailing ships. I'm not printing, but have seen some veryfine parts.
I would recommend Creality or Bambu
Creality Ender 3 if you want to go cheap and open source and learn about how they work. The user community is huge and very helpful and parts are abundant and they can produce a fairly high quality artifact.
You can crosspost to /s/3dprintingtoo.
I have a old and extremely modified monoprice makerselect v2. I would not suggest it if you are starting out.
A lot of people like bamboo labs but they have been a little fucky lately on their firmware/software stuff but it looks like they are trying to make good on it.
I have a friend with a somewhat recent version of a prusa3d that they like.
It kind of depends on what you want to do with it and the features you want?
Do you want multi-filament (color or others). Do you want a huge print bed. Do you want to have a resin based printer that is light cured?
Etc...
@MrFadedGloryfor your thoughts on the Bamboo printer.
I'm looking at the QIDI plus4 and it looks like about the right size - just about a cubic foot. Should work for whatever I get up to.
I don't know anything about the differences in filament or resin or whatnot. I was about to start watching videos on that topic.
