Specifically regarding teeth cleaning. Couple of questions: what's the difference between a regular cleaning versus a deep clean? How does polishing your teeth not wear out the dentine?

The dentist is the only medical office I visit regularly (twice a year). Been with the same practice for over 25 years. They have never mentioned “deep cleaning” to me.

I've never needed one either. I actually didn't go to the dentist for about 5 years and my teeth we're fine. I had a lot of staining from tea and pomegranate juice. I do have a slight cavity they say but it's so small that they want me to fix it with using fluoride mouthwash and fluoride toothpaste. My thought was why don't we just drill the cavity out before it gets worse but what do I know about denting and teeth

Trust your instincts. I don’t believe fluoride has ever been truly proven to prevent cavities. Good luck.

Too late. I'll see the dental hygienist in.

I've never heard a deep cleaning before. Just the standard twice yearly ones.

Just use a high quality electric toothbrush and floss. That's all I do and every time I go in for a cleaning they always say there's barely anything to scrape off.

I had a deep cleaning done. I hadn't been to the dentist in over 20 years. They numb you and do half your mouth at a time so it was two visits about a week apart to have it done. I wouldn't bother with it if you go to the dentist regularly. I did it because it really did need to be done. They've never suggested it since. I got cleanings every 4 months for the first 2 years after the deep clean but I've changed them to every 6 even though my dentist wanted me to stay on the 4 supposedly since it had originally been so long. I'm not a fan of tooth stuff so going every six months is more than enough for me.

I have a single cavity in a wisdom tooth, currently, that when I go in for my cleaning in Jan I'll make an appointment to get filled. The dentist didn't fill it last time I was in because I hadn't decided if I was going to get the wisdoms yanked. I'm not in the mood to deal with it at least not for a few years so I figure I'll just have it filled.

Not sure what a deep clean is. Never heard of that. Two cleanings a year is what every dentist I've ever been too has called it.

Supposedly a deep cleaning is when they use novocaine on the inside of your mouth and then dig in with the dental utensils to get plaque and or other horrors from below the gum line out. It's supposed to be god-awful so they only do quadrants.I don't believe it's covered by the insurance but more than once every couple of years. My father said he had a deep cleaning done but that as far as he could tell they didn't go really deep into the gums because he had zero recovery afterwards and no blood or anything so it might just be a marketing tactic to suck more money out of us.

Sounds like money making tactic unless someone has horrible teeth to begin with.

I dated a young woman for a couple of months who didn't take care of her teeth all that well. But she had a deep cleaning and after the doctor was finished with her her mouth was completely destroyed for days. And then the healing started where she started to scab over on the gums and that was pretty gross to look at. I didn't feel bad for her because all she had to do was brush her teeth floss for some reason she wouldn't do it everyday which just blew my mind. We didn't kiss all that much so I never spent much time examining her mouth.
