So I'm thinking about gifts and thought it might be a good idea to create a poster with a big motive, created with lots of smaller images. Guess it's being called photographic mosaic.

Is there a free or non-rip-off way to load a programme and create those on your own?

you might try AndreaMosaic.

never used it, just saw it mentioned on a yt vid of how to get a similar effect using photoshop.
