Yes I was somewhat of a fan, and read his books way back in the seventies. Fascinating stuff, he is gone now, RIP.

Yes, I read his first 4, broadly called: The teachings of Don Juan, A Yaqui Way of Knowledge." We disussed it it religion class, and my Grandmother gave me the books for Christmas. Fleetwood Mac addressed this in one of their songs. IIRC, he later admitted it was all bullshit.

Yeah, from Fleetwood Mac's song Miles Away (recorded before Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham ever joined the group):

"Don Juan goes up in a cloud of smoke, and all those Hare Krishnas turned out to be a joke..."

imo Only the first book was any good.

As I remember he's the lucid dreaming (astral body) guy.

[–] 1 pt

Me. I read a bunch of his books in the early 80s.

[–] 1 pt

I do but he was seriously deluded, and lead many people down the la la path.

It's a guy who led a bunch of people to their death in the desert if memory serves

Like he wrote a bunch of stories in the 70s and everybody on dope was like "wow awesome I'll do just that" and they ended up fucking themselves by believing a cool story essentially

Now I've never read the guy I just heard some people talk about him years ago

[–] 1 pt

He always talked about the need of having a good guide. Perhaps some people rightly earned their Darwin award by ignoring this.

Yeah, maybe... Or maybe it was just yet another new age cult ending in a collective suicide...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carlos_Castaneda#Death

>After Castaneda stepped away from public view in 1973, he bought a large multi-dwelling property in Los Angeles which he shared with some of his followers, including Taisha Abelar (formerly Maryann Simko) and Florinda Donner-Grau (formerly Regine Thal). Like Castaneda, Abelar and Donner-Grau were students of anthropology at UCLA. Each subsequently wrote books about their experiences of Castaneda's teachings from a feminist perspective that Castaneda endorsed as authentic.[16] Around the time Castaneda died, his companions Donner-Grau, Abelar and Patricia Partin informed friends they were leaving on a long journey. Amalia Marquez (also known as Talia Bey) and Tensegrity instructor Kylie Lundahl also left Los Angeles. Weeks later, Partin's red Ford Escort was found abandoned in Death Valley. Luis Marquez, Bey's brother, went to police in 1999 over his sister's disappearance, but could not convince them that it merited investigation.[6] In 2003, Partin's sun-bleached skeleton was discovered by a pair of hikers in Death Valley's Panamint Dunes area and identified in 2006 by DNA testing. The investigating authorities ruled the cause of death as undetermined.[6][17] However, Castaneda often talked about suicide, and associates believe the women killed themselves in the wake of Castaneda's death.[6]

I read all the books when they came out. I don't remember what they were about, so they must of not made much of an impression. Maybe it was all the drugs...

[–] 1 pt

Yeah I remember reading a book on lucid dreaming by him in my teens. Cool stuff, but I've never been able to do it.
