If you're growing it long, it still needs to be trimmed. Every 3-5 months or so, get a trim. It'll save you the dead ends. If you're going to be out in the heat all summer, consider an undercut in the back. Cover your neck with a wet bandana or small towel to keep cool and keep the sun off of your neck.
