Most likely they were hacked. It sounds like the old " your grandson has been in an accident and is stuck in a random city. He needs money, can you get you Cc out so he can pay the bill? " scam that used to be prevalent in the 90's. Get ahold of them by other means and ask , because the entire family and friends may be getting one of these from scammers.
