I think the idea is that you are more likely to get sick when you are cold because your immune system is weakened. But you’re right, it sounds kind of like an old wives tale to me but who knows

It think it also has to do with blood circulation, when in cold environments your body restricts bloodflow to certain areas, making it also have less white blood cells

Also people being indoors more in close proximity to others. So really getting out into the cold might be better than being inside. Wearing a jacket to keep warm lets you stay outside more.

People do polar plunges into cold water, outside in the winter in order to strengthen their immune systems.

They don't stay there long term. That is thermal shock. Chronic stress is bad. Short bursts of stress is good.

People typically stayed indoors with others durring harsh winters. So virus spread. Always happens when its winter, so it must be the cold.

We've all got viruses in our system all the time. We only notice them when they begin to multiply unchecked by our immune system. When you are cold, hungry, or tired, your body cannot contain the viruses as well as when you are well-rested, well-fed and warm. That's why prolonged exposure to cold and wet can bring on a cold or a flu.

Bacterial infection? Or maybe it keeps your immune system humming so you fiight off the virus.

Because being cold suppresses your immune system.

Being cold wears you down. When you are tired, you are more susceptible to getting sick.

Russians, Finns, and a whole host of Nordic and northern-climate indigenous peoples do polar plunges and cold therapy treatments and have less ailments. Now, I'm sure part of that is genetic, as their ancestors also did that for millenia,, and they've inherited the genetic response to tolerating cold weather and being stronger with stronger immune systems, but it makes you think...

Put a mask on your face....so you touch your face a million times more than usual. Great idea.

Ive heard there was on major study that showed a link to being cold and getting sick, but it was never able to be consistently repeated in smaller studies
