I worked as a chemical engineer in refineries. There are a lot of processes that will change the yields you get out of a barrel of oil. The margins on diesel are much bigger than gasoline….they are making all the diesel they can.
Why a shortage? Here’s why:
Beginning of heating season. Plus nobody in the west is buying Russian oil. Plus reduced American output due to Joe Xiden. Plus OPEC production cuts just announced.
Diesel is a fuel to the common reader, it's written on the fuel pumps, we're not writing text books here.
Wasn't there something about additives too? I think I remembered reading something about that.
I don’t know. Popular additives that refiners use to meet diesel specs include lubricity, conductivity, pour point/cloud point, and off-road dye. If these additives are in short supply, that could cause diesel shortages.
