Body on frame is a good choice. 4Runner is one of the only options. Get a 4Runner.

I got the GX Lexus because I needed more tax deductions, its basically the same thing as the 4runner but nicer. As soon as the guy told me it was built on the Tundra Chassis I bought it. The Tundra was the best truck I've ever owned.

Went with the 4runner b/c I'm poorer. They're built side by side in the same factory. :)

The 4 runner is the only Toyota sold in NA built in a Lexus factory.

I drove one. Sluggish as hell, which is my only complaint.

It's not made or geared for hot rodding. 2 things about "sluggishness." 1. ECT POWER. Hit that button, it changes the shift points for more aggressive response. 2. VVT-i. Variable valve timing with intelligence. This controls air flow in to the engine. Air flow is restricted with flimsy pedal presses. It takes a harder pedal press to activate the correct valve timing. It wasn't the truck. Vvt is there to make the truck more fuel efficient. It was your foot not pressing the pedal hard enough.

I'm not a hot rodder, I'm an old fart who drives conservatively. I have a full sized van with a small 6 cylinder engine that can beat the shit out of a 4runner off the line. But when I test drove it, I was just driving normally, and noticed it was sluggish. If I get around to trying one out again I will try your suggestions because other than the weak pedal response, I like the vehicle.

Get the V8 one. Did some research and pretty gets the same gas mileage as the V6.

They haven't made a v8 version in 13 years. Yes they're still good but if you want a later model you'll get a perfectly fine v6.

Go for a rav 4. I have one and it has been very reliable (2011) stay away from VW tiguans or any VW with the 2 liter tfsi (engine codes ccta and cbfa) as they're total garbage. I can't be too upset tho, fixing those models pays my bills.

Rav4's are currently unobtainable. OP needs something now.

Used?

Highlander, Sequoia, Land Cruiser ... Go Toyota or Lexus. You have a choice of 4.7L or 5.7L V8 or 4.0L V6 depending upon year.

Honda Pilot isn't bad, can seat up to 8. The Honda 3.5L V6 is very reliable.

Old Chevy/GM Suburbans, particularly the 3/4 ton variety are very durable. Anything after about 2009 with the weak auto trans might cause issues later.

Scotty Kilmer on YT has made multiple videos on the best used SUVs to buy, and which new SUVs he'd stay away from and why.

Depends on constant need. Do you tow and need space for 8 nigglets or host need space for your nigglets

Odds are it will be cheaper to fix what you have, then buying a new one. Even the used car market has insane pricing right now.

In co used market is up 45% and higher.

I have a newer Chevy blazer I'm very happy with.

Rav4. Wife has one that’s nearing 200,000 miles. Still runs like a charm.

Get an orange Subaru Crosstrek/ Outback or Ascent. An orange subaru would look way better than a boring Rav4.

A Subaru? What are you, a socialist lesbian?

Yeah the Rav 4 is great. But I have a 99 Lexus RX300 with 322,000 miles on it and its still ticking. If you can find one with low miles and a good transmission, you'll strike gold. I've only had to replace a few things here and there that cost under 50 bucks (A-arms, ball joints, knock sensors, on-plug coil-All cheapo aftermarket) I saw one at an auction with 80,000 miles and a dented fender but I couldn't get it due to short notice.

Why a SUV? Having had one I'd never buy another. They're kinda okay for most things but not good at any one thing. I was constantly having to make compromises to accommodate the vehicle. And unless you're actually going offroad 4WD is just a gimmick that's very expensive to fix it if goes wrong (mine did). I've got a truck with a full rear seat now and I'm much happier, and the gas mileage is about the same.

Got a Highlander (2022 version) recently and I have to agree here. It's too small for what we bought it for, because while it fits the baby seat for our newborn it's also super fuckin cramped for me or even undriveable if the seat is behind the driver's side. So we're either looking at getting an even bigger SUV or a truck, and I'm leaning towards a truck myself.
