Poems are just thoughts that are stuck inside your own mind, and you can't perfectly express them to anyone else, ever.
That's why poems all sound retarded when you read them. They aren't for anyone else. Nobody else could ever understand them.
A poem is just for the person who wrote it, just for the person attempting to unburden their brain from another painful thought.
Therein lies the conundrum. You're right about poetry, or art in general, but a good artist can bring about an emotional response in another. It's impossible to get another to parse together your exact state of mind or thought processes, but you can lead them in the general direction and take them on an emotional ride. This is the true power of art.
