Hel is the realm of the dead in Nordic mythology and it's described as frozen cold. Hades is also used in the Bible but literally (I believe) means the grave. Often those words are used as translations for Gehenna, which was a valley in Jerusalem where people would burn their waste. Cultists of Moloch would sacrifice children there. The modern depiction of hell is a fabrication and a tool used to scare people into behaving.
