Document everything. If it's not in writing it didn't happen. If they give you verbal directions, send them an email "per your instructions today I am going to do x." The hardest part for me is doing exactly what I'm told when I know it will cause a problem. I have a natural desire to make things work, so I have to fight that when faced with an incompetent boss.
