I play theater of the mind. I go visual with closed eyes. I watch the patterns I see. Sometimes they are active and other times not. Sometimes I see 'real' imagery, that's when im close to falling into sleep like the Homer Simpson GIF of him backing slowly into a hedge. You asked!
Melatonin can help. Drinking valerian root or chamomile tea before bed can help. Keeping a proper sleep schedule is extremely helpful. If all else fails you can try to learn vipassana meditation.

Having chronic insomnia I just relax as much as possible and don't stress over it.
I take magnesium or L-theaine, sometimes both.
